Course Description:

Do you ever feel like there is something missing from your clinical toolbox? Do your back and hip pain patients get better, but then end up coming back in a few months later? Do you have trouble getting neck muscles to relax? Do your shoulder patients need constant cuing for posture? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this course is for you. The pelvic floor may be the missing link that could resolve these frustrations. For most physical therapists the pelvic floor is a dark and mysterious place. Don't let it intimidate you anymore! In this exercise based course you will learn how to incorporate pelvic floor training into the treatments you already use. Don’t worry, there will be no undressing involved! You will go to work Monday morning excited to use the assessment and treatment skills you learn in lab.

Course Objectives

  • Describe pelvic floor function and coordination
  • Describe the role of the diaphragm in posture and core stability
  • Identify pelvic floor and diaphragm dysfunction
  • Design functional exercise programs incorporating the pelvic floor into upper extremity, lower extremity, and spinal stabilization exercises

Speaker

Wynne Tezak, PT, DPT is a physical therapist at Thunder Bay Therapy and Sports Medicine in Alpena, MI.  She earned her doctorate in physical therapy from Oakland University in 2007, then completed further training to treat pelvic floor conditions in men and women in 2010. She does extensive education for the community and other professionals on pelvic health. She believes passionately that the pelvic floor is the often neglected key to good health and mobility.

Course Description: This seminar is designed to provide healthcare professionals working with adult female patients deeper understanding of common pelvic floor dysfunctions that should be considered when prescribing exercise interventions and instruction in performing ADLs. Through a review of female gender-specific anatomic, physiologic and hormonal influences, therapists will gain understanding of why women are at increased risk for pelvic floor injuries and common dysfunctions that occur during sports/exercise, during menopause, and during the childbirth year. Therapists will be able to instruct their female patients in how to strengthen and protect the pelvic floor muscles and promote continence during exercises, sports activities and daily activities of living. This course includes an introduction to obstetrics PT with participation in an interactive lab designed to increase understanding of orthopedic and breathing considerations during labor and delivery, and interventions to reduce risk of injury to the pelvic floor muscles during childbirth. This course is appropriate for PTs working in multiple settings that include but are not limited to outpatient orthopedics, sports medicine, inpatient and home health.
